Tidepool Condos

Tidepool Condos

When I was in elementary
I was in a play about
The tidepools.

My crush at the time was
The star, because of
Course she was.

I was too nervous about
Having to remember any lines
So I was a crew member.

Or, rather, I was an extra,
Off to the side in a two-man band
That pantomimed playing

To the tune of the music
About “Tidepool Condos”
Broadcast by the actual crew.

I didn’t even know
What the hell
A condo was.

And I didn’t care
About any hypothetical

All I cared was to
Hear that voice
More versed than mine,

Somewhere to the right
Where I couldn’t
See her.

Then I can recall
How after the show was
Over I watched her

Bow before I went up
With my other band member
To do the same.

We stood in a much
Less lime a light,
But that didn’t matter.

I was concerned with any
Visible sweat, that I
Thought the audience

Could see. I’d sit with
My prop on the side of
The stage years later,

After that performance
Five years prior, and
Many more that came later.

Sitting there, looking at
The multi-use room, it
all seemed so small then.

The small cafeteria, the
Small stage, and the small
Elementary school food.

And all the little trifles
Of little people over
Some tidepool condos.
