War Prize

War Prize

A beanie left behind
Has become part
Of a small tower,

War prizes scattered
Among remains of
Battlefront ruins.

We deserted to
Look
For gold.

From a noose chain
Hung a rare painting
By a dead artist,

And I think now
Of the bombed town who’s
Rubble we waded through.

Ordered, was the chain
To be unfastened
And the canvas “rescued”.
