Blood Diamond

Blood Diamond

Carpet bags dropped into polluted palms
In them glisten corrupt carbon stones
From the last run in a crime spree
Bringing wealth and its master key

For this treasure is not like the others
In deserts under scorching weather
This payday was not at all similar
For a cure must duly be administered

To this grotesque weed infectious greed
Which harvests scarce savannah gleams
Avaricious men dominate these plains
Caring not for their cultivated strains

Warlords, mercenaries, coal mine canaries
Roaming and searching the powder praries
For the jewels they will do anything
No telling what wrath they’ll bring

While footprints and tire tracks
Are left in granule geodes
Skeleton Canyon lights crack
And crystal-loading drifters show

Appearing with aviators
And top-unbuttoned shirts
In small Jeep freighters
Filled with spoils to import

Below rock hoodoos, meadows, and rolling dunes
Gem shell casings jump as pistolas say doom
Ancient hand cannons and sabres have battled
Unmarked graves surround old sites scattered

Frayed are the Jeep’s stowed cheats
These liars for hire work for cheap
Of scorn they know to course and reap
Of thorns they grow to force and reave
